LIVE THE EXPERIENCE

Where the West was decided,

Ares · Salamis Naval Battle Tour takes you to the places where the battle of 480 BC was fought — from the Pnyx and the trireme to Xerxes' Throne, high above the straits of Salamis.

A.01 · COMPANY

History isn't read. It's visited.

A tour of the actual places where the battle of Salamis unfolded, with the story told where it happened.

"Onward, sons of the Greeks, set your homeland free." — Aeschylus, The Persians

Ares · Salamis Naval Battle Tour is not a simple walk through archaeological sites. It is a story in three acts: the Pnyx, where Athenian citizens decided to resist; the trireme, the ship that decided the battle; and Mt. Aigaleo, the vantage point from which Xerxes watched his own fleet destroyed.

Each stop adds a piece to the same picture — the moment a smaller but better-organised force defeated an empire, and Athenian democracy found the space to grow.

A.04 · THE HISTORY

The Battle of Salamis

Salamis was not a day. It was the outcome of two years — an alliance that barely held, a city abandoned, and a stratagem that set the battle exactly where the Greeks wanted it fought.

The moment superior numbers became a liability — and the narrows decided the battle.

The campaign, step by step
  1. The Hellenic League 481 BC

    The Hellenic League

At Corinth, the Greek cities that choose to resist swear to a common defence. For the first time, rival cities set their quarrels aside.

  2. Crossing the Hellespont SPRING 480

    Crossing the Hellespont

Xerxes marches his army into Europe across a floating bridge of ships. The largest campaign the ancient world had seen begins.

  3. Thermopylae & Artemisium AUG 480

    Thermopylae & Artemisium

On land and at sea simultaneously, the Greeks buy time and pay dearly for it. The road into Attica opens.

  4. The evacuation of Athens SEP 480

    The evacuation of Athens

By decree of the assembly, the city empties. Women and children cross to Salamis, Aegina and Troezen; the men board the ships.

  5. The Acropolis in flames SEP 480

    The Acropolis in flames

The Persians enter an empty Athens and burn the Acropolis. The Greek fleet watches the smoke rise from Salamis.

  6. The council of commanders THE EVE

    The council of commanders

The Peloponnesians push to fall back to the Isthmus. Themistocles insists: the battle must be fought in the narrows, where numbers do not count.

  7. Themistocles' stratagem NIGHT

    Themistocles' stratagem

A messenger reaches Xerxes with a false report: the Greeks are preparing to slip away. The Persian fleet seals the straits and rows all night.

  8. The paean DAWN

    The paean

At first light the Greek triremes row out into the narrows, singing. The Persian fleet has already spent the night at the oars.

  9. The narrows THE BATTLE

    The narrows

In the tight channel the vast Persian fleet cannot deploy. Ships foul one another; the Greek rams find their mark.

  10. The throne and the retreat DUSK

    The throne and the retreat

From Mt. Aigaleo, Xerxes watches his fleet come apart. Within weeks he takes the road back to Asia.
